I woke up feeling fairly good. So I had a sausage and bacon slice for breakfast, and they both went down with no pain.

At our church we’ve currently got a right load of health disasters. There’s me (oesophagol cancer), the Carpet Layer (prostrate cancer) and the Butterfly (recent cancer plus health scare after a serious road traffic incident).

This results in each of us having to answer the question “how are you doing” over a dozen times.  So what we started last week was giving each of us a quick slot at the start of the service to give an update on our status. This saves time and wear on the larynxes of me and the Carpet Layer.  (It’s no problem for the Butterfly,  she could talk for England – or in her case Ireland.)   The best part was that we all had positive stuff to report.

Then we had lunch, and I ate a homegrown salad butty with corned beef, and I didn’t scream once. I’ve not been able to eat bread for two months now, until last Friday.

It was dinner tonight that cracked me up.  I ate gammon with mixed veg, <emphasis>with potatoes</emphasis>. This time I looked at the plateful, and thought I must try it, but I was scared.  The last time I tried potatoes I ended up wanting to scream with the pain, it was so bad.   But I reminded myself I was a man, and there’s things a man has to face by himself. So I took a forkful of potato, and then another, and then cleared my plate.

That’s what cracked me up. Half of me was crying because I’d just eaten my first normal meal in two months, the other half was laughing at the ludicrous sight of a grown man crying his heart out because he’s been able to eat potato.  The way here has been hard, harder even than I expected, but I survived.   That’s what I promised myself back in March  “I will eat – mi fwytaf fi” ,  and today I did.

Closing thought

When an oncologist goes off-duty, do they become an offcologist?

  1. One half of me is chuckling at your blog, the other half is willing you on 🙂

  2. That is good to hear that you finished eating all what was on your plate with tears of pleasure!

  3. Hello there my friend(s), as I’d like to think there are a few other LP-ers knocking around!
You make me laugh and cry in equal measure which I suspect is the best place to be, well, actually, no laughing all the time would be better, but as my old Mater used to say, how would you recognise the good times if you didn’t have the hateful ones – umm, well, quite a sage that one! Actually I’ve just had a mental picture of visiting ‘uncle’ (or was that ‘grandfather’) in Mary Poppins – the levitating and laughing – now that would be a good trick MC – can you work on that one for us?! oh dear, now I have an even more peculiar image of you bouncing off your dining room ceiling!!!!

OK, at risk of rambling…………..always there, much love Txx
