May 202016

On 17 May I reported the start of my hair loss,  today I had to manfully face up to the implications.

Firstly I have to wear a hairnet in bed, or I wake up at 3am with a mouthful of my own hair.  This is not pleasant!  Fortunately I used to maintain a warehouse robot system for British Sugar in Bury St Edmunds. Hairnets were obligatory when working onsite, and I still have one.  So at least I can tell myself it is a manly hairnet, a small sop to my dignity.

And today I went to the Christie to look at wigs.  There’s about 50 styles for women, just 2 for men. But one looks vaguely like my own hairstyle (scruffy), and can be ordered in the same colour, so I ordered one to be picked up next Friday.

It’s a sort of elasticated base, and fits quite tight to the scalp, so it shouldn’t come off easily.  Hopefully my daughter-in-law, the Secret Redhead, will have shaved off everything by then, so I’ll have just a day or so of being a baldy.

I did look at hats, but didn’t really fancy them, although I did make one fascinating discovery.  They also supply head caps to stop loose hair being a problem.  They are made by taking a pair of women’s tights , cutting off the legs, and stitching up the holes.  It apparently works very well, and SheWhoMustBeObeyed has one (pair?) for me in her handbag.  I must confess to being surprised, I thought the only people who wore women’s tights on their heads were bank robbers.

Meanwhile, my weight is back to 86Kg, so I’m pleased about that, and so far the only side effect is a metallic taste in my mouth. The next few days will tell on that.  Last cycle my problems started late on day 3 and lasted to day 8.

One Response to “Hair today, gone tomorrow”

  1. Two people who were challenged as regards follicles were the late John Wayne and, I think, the late Bing Crosby. Of course, there was also the late Yul Brinner but I think he just decided he liked being bald and not having to comb his hair. Really, my main reason for commenting was to show that I can still do times sums.
